What is Potable Water?

Potable Water is basically high quality drinking water (H20), meaning that it can be drunk without any harm. In most countries the water supply in houses, commerce and industry is all Potable Water. Typically the water supply networks deliver potable water, whether it is to be used for drinking, washing or landscape irrigation.

This supply may come from several possible sources such as Municipal water supply, Water wells, Delivered by truck and it is also processed water from creeks, streams, rivers, lakes, rainwater, etc. Domestic water systems have evolved greatly from when it was just a river or stream next to home. Modern indoor plumbing delivers clean potable water to each service system.

Potable Water and Plumbing

There are many different kinds of plumbing pipes available in the plumbing world. When it comes to doing your next plumbing project, you will have to choose which material would be best for you.

Copper:

The Copper Pipes are one of the most used pipes and are mainly used for drain, vent and potable water supply. Mainly for its durability, and the fact that it is easy and flexible to install. Also copper is much safer in natural disasters, resistant to intense weather and competitively priced. With the dependability and value of copper, most plumbers choose copper for most of their plumbing applications. Homeowners also prefer copper plumbing because it generally increases the resale value of homes. It also ensures a clean, safe water supply. Lead has been removed from the manufacturing process so it no longer poses a health risk unlike with galvanized pipes

CPVC:

The CPVC Pipe (Polyvinyl chloride) is a rigid plastic pipe that is put together with solvent joints. If you are in a part of the world where the water is more aggressive and will eat away at copper tubing, CPVC is the perfect pipe for your application. This aggressive water can sometimes eat through copper pipe within eight years. CPVC is unaffected by aggressive water, and its smooth inner surface won’t collect mineral deposits. The CPVC piping does have a lot of good advantages but a drawback is that in case of fire or electric spark they spread poisonous gases.

PEX:

PEX tubing is the newest entrant in the plumbing application scenario. It is a flexible plastic pipe than can be installed much like electrical wiring. Suitable for use with both hot and cold water they can be used in conjunction with steel, copper, PVC and CPVC plumbing pipe. They are also highly resistant to bursting.
